Invited Talk - “Conquering Complexity”

By Mike Hinchey, director of Lero, the Irish Software Engineering Research Centre, and co-editor of the 2012 Springer book on “Conquering Complexity”.

“We consider complexity in software development, distinguishing it from being merely "complicated".  We discuss some of its sources and causes and the effects that complexity can have, highlighting that much complexity comes from software evolution and that complexity must be addressed early and continually.

We discuss common causes of complexity and the importance of requirements and architecture in addressing it.  We consider means of conquering complexity: greater domain knowledge, abstraction, stronger engineering underpinnings, automatic code generation, to mention just a few.  We consider some innovative technologies that have proven to be successful and illustrate their role in a complex NASA concept mission.”
